This table represents the percentage of time faculty report spending on research, teaching, and other professorial activities in a given 7-day work week. Institutions may replace percentages from the overall FSSE population with their own results in order to ground their data and make comparisons across disciplinary areas as well as against national averages.
Table 1: Percentage of time per week full-time faculty spend on research, teaching, and other professorial activities by general area of academic appointment
According to FSSE 2009 and NSOPF 2004 results, the average full-time faculty member spends one-sixth to a quarter of their time on research and scholarly work, over half to two-thirds of their time on teaching related activities (e.g. time in class, grading), and a little less than a quarter of their time on “other” activities (e.g., advising, service).
