In 2006, the FSSE survey asked faculty members the number of times they attended teaching improvement activities (e.g. workshops, forums) in the current academic year. Below is a summary of the average participation among selected activities by academic discipline.
A follow-up question asked how important they thought their institution should provided services focused on certain topics, such as creating a supportive classroom environment and improving student-faculty interactions.
The table below suggests that faculty who believe services for supportive classroom environments are important to very important are, also, participating in professional development activities more often. The total average is 11.3 times per year, compared to only 8.1 times per year for those who thought services that improve supportive classroom environments are only somewhat to not at all important.
